"The purpose of this portion of the book is to invite members to engage in a journey of recovery and to serve as a resource in gaining a personal understanding of the spiritual principles in the Twelve Steps of Narcotics Anonymous. This portion of the book explores the spiritual principles in each step and how we experience them in our lives. This book looks at a sample of female drug addicts seeking recovery in Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Through working the Twelve Steps and by attending women-only groups, these women are able to confront the double standard that makes recovery from addiction especially difficult.

The main text of Alcoholics Anonymous, or “The Big Book” as AA members call it, goes step by step through 12 distinct phases, each crucial in achieving sustainable recovery from addiction. Each step centers around a phrase, many of them invoking the ideas of God and Christianity, used to guide a recovering addict in various facets of their journey into sobriety. An English translation was then published in , with Robert A. Powell basing his rendering on the author's original French manuscript, whereas the published French edition (ISBN ) does not always follow the French original manuscript. The author is known, but has requested to remain anonymous.

The moving story of The Anonymous People is told through the faces and voices of the citizens, leaders, volunteers, corporate executives, and public figures who are laying it all on the line to save the lives of others just like them.
